Reasons Why Pipe Damage Can Happen

Pipe damage can occur for a whole variety of reasons, ranging from neglect to unforeseen environmental factors. Knowing the common culprits behind pipe damage can go a long way in taking the necessary preventive measures to keep your pipes in tip-top condition. Today, Mr. Rooter Plumbing outlines the top reasons why pipe damage can happen.

  • Corrosion

Corrosion is a part of the normal wear and tear for metal pipes as they age. However, pipes can corrode before their time if you have a hard water supply or use harsh chemical cleaners to clear drain clogs. You should replace metal pipes with corrosion-resistant materials such as PVC, PEX, or copper with proper interior lining. Repiping your home with these durable alternatives reduces the risk of leaks and improves water quality.

  • Freezing

Freezing temperatures during winter are a common cause of pipe damage in homes. Frozen water inside water pipes expands and exerts pressure on pipe walls that can exceed the pipe’s structural integrity. Some of the pipes that are susceptible to breaking during winter are those in unheated spaces or running through exterior walls.

To prevent pipe damage when the temperatures plummet, consider insulating exposed pipes with foam sleeves or heat tape. It’s also a good idea to allow faucets to drip slightly to maintain water flow—this helps to relieve pressure by preventing complete freezing within the pipe. In addition, open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. If you're leaving your home for an extended period, drain the water system to eliminate the risk of frozen and burst pipes.

  • Tree Root Intrusion

Tree roots naturally grow toward water sources, including water pipes and sewer lines running underground. That means they will do everything they can to sneak their way into pipes. Even a minor crack is enough for a tiny root to penetrate, and once inside, the root thrives in the moist environment. Infiltrating tree roots obstruct water flow, causing slow-draining fixtures and sewage backups. If tree roots have infiltrated your pipes, contact a licensed plumber to carry out repairs. In severe cases where the damage is extensive, an expert will recommend repiping the entire property to prevent further issues.

  • High Water Pressure

Excessive water pressure is a major cause of pipe damage. Most pipes can only withstand water pressure of 40-80 psi. If the water pressure exceeds 80 psi, it will gradually weaken the pipes over time. In some extreme conditions, too much water pressure may even cause the pipes to burst. It’s advisable to install a water pressure regulator at the point of entry to adjust the pressure to safer levels.

If you suspect high water pressure in your home, you can carry out a test using a water pressure gauge, which is readily available at most home improvement stores for around $10. Simply attach the gauge to an outdoor faucet, turn on the water fully, and read the pressure. A reading above 80 psi indicates excessive high pressure, requiring adjustment by a professional plumber.

  • Age and Wear

Over time, all pipes deteriorate. Metal pipes succumb to corrosion, weakening their walls and leading to leaks. PVC pipes become brittle and prone to cracking. Older homes with aging plumbing systems are particularly vulnerable. Call a professional plumbing service for repiping if your pipes are over 50 years old.

  • Physical Damage

Pipes are susceptible to physical damage from various sources. Digging during landscaping or construction can puncture or crush underground pipes. Accidental impacts during home renovations or even heavy objects falling on exposed pipes can also cause cracks or breaks. Careful planning during construction and awareness of pipe locations can prevent pipe damage.
